In Raman scattering, the photon creates an electron–hole pair, which then recombines quickly (sometimes). The electron, for example, can emit or absorb an optical phonon prior to this recombination, so that the photon that comes out from the recombination process lies at a different energy than the incoming photon. This shift in energy is the Raman effect. , how many phonons exist in that state. In equilibrium, the number is small, but with the phonon cascade mentioned above, this number can be driven to a relatively large value.
